WordSocket: A Casual Web Game Developed Without Plug-ins

Abstract

WordSocket is a casual web game developed without the use of plug-ins. The game is a variant of the board game Scrabble, where players build words using tiles of letters. The project is a result of researching whether or not it is possible to develop a casual web game without relying on third party browser plug-ins. The project is built entirely on new technologies coming to browsers, referred to as HTML5 in the media. Instead of relying on a plug-in like Flash, WordSocket makes use of HTML5's canvas and audio tags to create rich game play experience. For data communication, WordSocket relies on web sockets, a new technology that allows developers to open a port from a web page, giving them bi-directional communication between client and server.
